Status Migraine: Status Migraine Symptoms, Status Migraine Treatment

Migraine help is available. New migraine treatment and migraine headache medicine knowledge is found on this page.

What is it?

A status migraine is categorized as a migraine attack that goes on for more than seventy-two hours. One reason that this migraine lasts so long is due to the sterile inflammatory response to the migraine. It develops around the walls of the affected blood vessels. This is a rare and very serious type of headache, which may at times require an individual be hospitalized. Migraine headaches affect more women than men, and this may be due to the fluctuations in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These types of migraines can affect both children and adults, although it is more adults that suffer from status migraines.

What can cause them?

They are a number of causes for a status migraine. It can be brought on by many different factors. It can be stress-related. It can be brought on by anger, depression, and other changes in an individual’s moods, and personality. It can also be triggered by foods, such as chocolate, cheese, fried foods, meats, or red wine. Finally, it could be a reaction to light, noise, or a certain type of odor. It is important to recognize the things that can bring on a migraine attack, so that you can avoid them.

What are the symptoms involved?

An individual who is suffering from a status migraine may experience on or all of the following symptoms. Many times the symptoms are prolonged and can lead an individual to be hospitalized in order to try and relieve them. They include: nausea, vomiting, changes in vision, lightheaded, confusion, tiredness, feeling cold or sweating, and diarrhea.

How can it be diagnosed?

An individual will need to seek help if affected with a status migraine. It is a very serious headache that could make an individual feel like their head will explore. The pain becomes so severe that you could require a stay in the hospital. A doctor will first need to get your medical history, a list of your symptoms, your family history, conduct a physical exam, and see if you have recently been exposed to any of the triggers that might be responsible for this type of migraine. Once that is determined, the doctor will be able to offer treatments to the individuals.

What treatments are available?

The treatments used for status migraines include taking medications such as Inderal, Corgard, Blocadren, and beta-blockers. Many times doctors will try and find the treatments that offer the fewest side effects to the individual. In some cases, individuals may be prescribed antidepressants, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors to reduce the pain. If an individual ends up in the hospital, an individual is usually administered dihydroergotamine mesylate intravenously to try and reduce the prolonged migraine attack. An individual may also be given corticosteroids to help decrease the inflammatory process, and this has had some positive results in the past. In taking these drugs, doctors usually begin with lower doses, and then gradually increase it. Treatment also includes removing the triggers that may have been the cause of the attack to begin with. Some individuals have found relief by seeking out alternative forms of treatment. They use massages and acupuncture as another form of treatment for migraine headaches.

How can it be prevented?

In order to try and prevent a reoccurrence of migraine headaches an individual needs to avoid the foods that may trigger them. These foods would have to be tracked and removed from your diet. An individual should eat regular meals and avoid having low blood sugar. You may also want to make sure that you are getting enough sleep and regular exercise. Many times lack of sleep plays a direct role to the onset of migraine headaches. Regular exercise can help to reduce the stress in your life, and thus prevent migraines from reoccurring.

An individual, who is experiencing migraines, whether it is an adult or a child, should seek out professional care if it lasts longer than a couple of days. Since a status migraine can sometimes last for seventy-two hours, but it is important that a doctor rule out other factors first. An individual will need to exercise extreme caution when dealing with these types of migraines as it could lead to other health concerns if not treated immediately.
