Migraine and Sexual Desire

Migraine is a very painful disease of the nervous system which is characterized by intense and severe headache. It also causes nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.

Although it is conventionally believed that headache reduces sexual desire but a recent research has found very interesting results. The objective of research was to find a relation between migraine and sexual desire. It has been found out that migraine patients had a higher level of sexual desire than their counterparts.

The research was conducted on a group of adults who were asked various questions that indicated their sexual desires. They were also asked whether they suffered from migraine or not. Although the usual excuse for reduced sexual activity is headache but the research implies just the opposite. Migraine and sexual desire are linked to each other by a very complex relationship involving a brain chemical called serotonin. Migraine patients have a low level of serotonin. A high level of serotonin in body implies a low sexual desire. So it was concluded that migraine is closely related to sexual desires.

The study also shows that men have a larger sexual desire than females. But females with migraine were found to have same level of sexual desire as males with minor headaches. Moreover, the study also shows that level of sexual desire in migraine patients was quite more than those with normal headaches of order of about 20 percent.Migraine Sexual Desire

Although the study was conducted on young people only and it cannot be implied for middle-age of old people.

Although this is not the first time that migraine has been linked to sexual desire, the origin of this link traces back to 17th century. One of the researchers says that some people are relieved of their migraine when they have an orgasm. Since both migraine and orgasm are physiologic processes, so orgasm as one of them turns off the other.

But it surely opens up the opportunity to study other phenomena that are related to nervous and chemical system of man.
