Ocular Migraine is a neurological set of symptoms that are accompanied by peculiar and unnatural sensations of the visual capabilities. These visual sensations are sometimes follower by severe pain in the area around the head and can ultimately result in the person committing vomiting. It is one of the most severe migraine attacks and is catalyzed by the sensitivity to sound and light. Ocular migraine typically focuses on that part of aura in which visual symptoms predominate. Unlike normal migraine, there may never be an actual headache.
Symptoms of ocular migraine:
Ocular migraine is sometimes called a migraine without headache. An ocular migraine will start as a series of unusual visual sensations followed by a migraine headache. It distorts images when you look at them. The distortion usually begins in the image’s center, and then moves to one side. Ocular migraine is likely to affect only one eye at a time. As an ocular migraine progresses, images may turn grey or wavy. It shows up as a tiny floating spot on the screen that gradually enlarges over time. The basic symptom of ocular migraine is a hole in the field of your vision. You may be watching television but you might not be able to see the centre of screen. If you close the affected eye you can see the affected portion. The affected eye develops a temporary blind spot.
Causes of ocular migraine:
Although the causes of ocular migraine are not perfectly known, but it is believed to be triggered as a result of unusual stimulation of nerves located the back of brain. Doctors believe that it is caused due to vascular spasm that affects the ocular blood vessel which supplies blood to the vision area of brain. Some believe that it might be triggered by over stress, oral contraceptives, premenstrual changes, alcohol or consumption of red wine and chicken livers.
Treatment of ocular migraine:
There is no sure shot method to treat ocular migraine. Prevention of occurrence of ocular migraine is best treatment for it. Reducing stress levels, taking adequate sleep and adjusting the diet might help to prevent its occurrence. Finding a quiet, dark area to rest in for thirty minutes is an excellent way to counteract the disabling effects of an ocular migraine. Being able to sit in the dark with eyes closed helps to limit some of the nausea and inability to focus on objects..
